Mary Ellen Carlton – Mt. Vernon

100-year-old Mt. Vernon resident Mary Ellen Carlton, formerly of McLeansboro, died at 10:48 a.m. on Tuesday (March 3) at GreenTree Assisted Living Facility in Mt. Vernon. She was born on November 10, 1919, in Okawville to Jake Anderson and Anna (Blake) Jones. She married Dr. Wendell Carlton on March 21, 1942, in Evansville, IN, and he preceded her in death on August 18, 1996.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in McLeansboro and was retired after 30 years of teaching in the Hamilton County schools, including 25 years of kindergarten and 28 years in the Hamilton County System. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association/PEO.

Mary Carlton is survived by son Marvin Carlton of McLeansboro; one daughter-in-law Brenda Carlton; grandchildren James David (Kara) Carlton of Harrisburg, Cheryl (Mark) Carlton Deal, DDS, of Middleboro, IN; and Karyn (companion Buddy) Carlton of Chicago; and great-grandchildren Johnathan and Kailyn Carlton and Kyle and Andrew Deal. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, one daughter, one sister, and one brother.

Services for Mary Carlton will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday (March 9) at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro with Reverends Russell Anderson and Leland Widick officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.
